Modern slaughterhouse inaugurated in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): The governor on Monday inaugurated a modern slaughterhouse in southern Kandahar province.

Established over 25 acres of land, the slaughterhouse in the Kotel Morchi area north of Kandahar City has many facilities including a meat testing laboratory.

At the inauguration ceremony, Governor Toryalai Weesa told Pajhwok Afghan it was a long-standing demand of Kandahar residents to have such a facility.

“The slaughterhouse will not only help improve environment but also address concerns regarding unhealthy meat.”

Weesa a health team of the Public Health Ministry was being appointed to regularly examine animals before they were slaughtered.

Mayor Mohammad Omar Omar said the slaughterhouse had been constructed on 25 acres of land. It has a waiting area for animals, their feeding and slaughtering facilities, he added.

The municipality-funded project cost $240,000, said the mayor, who was upbeat the slaughterhouse would help resolve environment-related problems.
