KABUL): The national cricket team was welcomed by a cheering crowd upon its arrival at the Kabul International Airport on Tuesday from Singapore, where they defeated India and Nepal in the Asian Cricket Council’s Emerging Teams Cup, but failed to reach the semifinals.

Afghanistan’s Cricket Board (ACB) spokesman Farid Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News the squad was received by ACB Chairman Shahzada Massoud, Chief Executive Dr. Noor Mohammad Murad, government officials and a crowd of fans.

Massoud praised the national heroes for winning matches against India, Nepal and Namibia during the just-concluded tour, calling their success a big achievement on regional and international level.

Dr. Murad said the side had returned home victorious and its advancing trend in the game was praiseworthy. “Afghanistan are ranked 11th in the cricket world, a matter of great pride for an under-resourced country,” he remarked.

Skipper Mohammad Nabi Issakhel told Pajhwok Afghan News the boys played well in Namibia, winning two matches in a row. He linked the wins to the players’ hard work, prayers of the nation and the board’s efforts for providing them with facilities and training ahead of the tour.

The captain said they had cut short the distance to the 2015 World Cup and hoped to make it to the mega event with prayers of the nation.

After winning matches in Namibia, the national team then travelled to Singapore, where it upset India under-23 in a match of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Emerging Teams Cup, but failed to find their way to semifinals.
