SHARAN (PAN): An 18-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself on her wedding day in a village on the outskirts of Sharan, the capital of southeastern Paktika province, residents said on Saturday.
The incident took place in Selai village. The girl had been refusing to marry a man she considered her foster brother, one resident Abdul Rahim said. Her family, including parents and in-laws, ignored her threats to commit suicide if she was forced into marrying the man.
Another resident, Hayat Khan, said the girl had been engaged in her childhood. “She repeatedly warned her family of taking her life. She would say she would not marry her foster brother and would prefer to kill herself.”
Officials at the civil hospital confirmed receiving the girl’s corpse, saying it appeared she had hanged herself. Director of Women’s Affairs Bibi Hawa Khoshiwal said the girl’s father was a poor man and had four daughters. She said the victim’s uncle wanted to forcibly marry her to his son.
