KABUL Omar Daudzai has been appointed as acting interior minister and Kabul police head Ayub Salangi as his deputy, the government announced on Sunday.
President Hamid Karzai has appointed Daudzai as acting minister under Article 65 of the constitution, with a view to improving the security situation, the Office of Administrative Affairs said in a statement.
The appointment came after the Wolesi Jirga — lower house of parliament –unseated Gen. Mustafa Patang as interior minister by bringing a vote of no-confidence against him in July.
Subsequently, the president referred the issue to the Supreme Court, which allowed Patang to continue as acting minister. He has been replaced by Daudzai, who is said to be a candidate for the presidential slot.
In compliance with Karzai’s orders, Gen. Salangi has been appointed as deputy minister of interior, replacing Abdur Rahman Rahman.
