FAIZABAD (PAN insurgents were killed during an operation in Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province.
The offensive involving Afghan police, army and local police personnel was carried out on Thursday, provincial police chief, Col. Jahangir Kiramat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The dead insurgents included a dreaded commander, Nazir, he said, adding three policemen, including an officer, were injured during the still ongoing operation.
Warduj district chief Dawlat Mohamad Khan said several villages, including Rukhshan, Ghachan and Zwoo, were cleared of insurgents as a result of the operation. However, he put at four the number of security men injured.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said eight Afghan army soldiers were killed and their two armoured tanks destroyed during roadside bomb attacks in Warduj.
Mujahid claimed seven others soldiers suffered casualties during attacks in Ragh district of Badakhshan, saying four fighters also sustained injuries.
But local officials dismissed his claims.
