KABUL): Parliamentarians representing eastern provinces on Sunday announced they had formed an electoral alliance “Eastern Movement of Unity” to field a consensus runner in the April 5 presidential elections.

The movement’s spokesman, Mirwais Yasini, also Wolesi Jirga first deputy speaker, told a meeting held in this regard in Kabul that lawmakers of both houses of parliament from eastern Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar and Nuristan provinces had obtained the movement’s membership.

He said the movement was aimed at making efforts for improving security in the country. They would struggle to boost the country’s economy and strengthen other sectors and anti-corruption efforts.

“We are committed to working jointly to put pressure on the government to ensure that peace is restored and the country’s institutions are strengthened,” Yasini said.

He said the movement would also field its candidate in the presidential elections or it would support another candidate if he had the potential to put an end to the current problems facing the nation.

The lawmaker said members of provincial councils and tribal influential figures would be contacted to become part of the movement.

“We don’t want the movement to be limited only to eastern provinces, but we will try to expand it to other parts of the country,” he said.
