KABUL.

Commending Public Health Minister Dr. Suraya Dalil for her leadership, the agency in a statement said it would maintain support of her ministry even after current activities end.

It said the MoPH efforts have enabled the international community to contribute to successes that have touched the lives of millions of Afghan men, women and children.

“Our collaboration with the Ministry, along with assistance from other donors, dating back to 2002, has yielded impressive health gains. The Afghanistan Mortality Survey 2010, the most-extensive survey ever conducted in Afghanistan, documents the great improvements in infant, child, and maternal mortality achieved in all 34 provinces.”

The statement said despite the enormous gains in the health sector, Afghanistan remained a least-developed country and Afghans, particularly women and children, continued to face serious health challenges. “A long-term partnership between Afghanistan and the international community remains critical.”

It said investments in health were essential for development, including economic growth and USAID remained firm in its support to the Ministry of Public Health to ensure access to quality primary health care services for the people of Afghanistan.

Estimates suggest that through USAID’s programme, the Ministry of Public Health supports access to health services for almost half the population of Afghanistan, with more than a million visits to USAID-supported facilities each month. Three out of every four of these patients are women or children.
