SHARANA (PAN, but killed jointly by foreign and local insurgents.

Citing confessions made by two detained Afghan militants in connection with her killing, Paktika deputy police chief Col. Abdul Shah Zarifi told Pajhwok Afghan News the detainees had a direct involvement in the murder.

He said the detainees had told their interrogators they killed Banerjee, known in Afghanistan as Sahib Kamala, for making the film “Escape from Taliban” and spying on the Taliban for India through the internet from her Afghan husband’s home.

Banerjee, 49, whose book about her dramatic escape from the Taliban was made into a Bollywood film, was dragged out of her husband’s house by masked gunmen in the Sry Kala area of Sharan, and shot dead on Sept. 4 near a madrassa.

Officials have said the detained individuals, who belong to the Haqqani network, had said they had been ordered to kill Banerjee because the film from her book was an insult to the Taliban.

But the Taliban have denied involvement in her murder.  Banerjee was married to local businessman Jaanbaz Khan and had recently moved back to live with him in Paktika, reportedly to run a health.

Her book “Kabuliwala’s Bengali Wife,” which is an account of her escape from the Taliban two decades ago, was made into a Bollywood film in 2003.
