KABUL): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Wednesday announced a significant increase in the number of prisoners in the country, saying about 28,000 individuals were being held in different provinces.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, Deputy Director of Prisons Lt. Gen. Mohammad Qais Fasehi said the growing number of prisoners, up by 10,000 over the past decade, indicated better law enforcement and rule of law of in the country.

He added: “Most of the individuals have been jailed for committing crimes, including murder, terrorist activities, drug smuggling, robberies and administrative corruption.”

Over the past few years, the government had been able to establish special detention facilities, with some of them housed in the rented compounds, the official continued.

A day earlier, President Hamid Karzai ordered a review of the prisons’ situation to bring reforms to detention centres, arrange vocational training courses for prisoners and protect their rights.
