KABUL had reached his predecessor Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani’s goal of independence, asking the nation to solidify its foundation.

Addressing an event marking the second death anniversary of the ex-chairman of the High Peace Council in Kabul, the president hailed Rabbani as a “tolerant and pro-people leader who reached out to the entire population”.

The wisdom and knowledge of the then peace negotiator, who was assassinated in Kabul two years back, was known to all and his top priority had been Afghanistan’s stability and sovereignty, the president said.

Rabbani had kept his promise of laying down his life for peace in the country, Karzai said, adding robust relations with neighbours and Afghanistan’s progress were among the late leader’s priorities.

“I’m constantly feeling the vacuum created by his martyrdom and wish he were alive today. Respect for him will take us to his goals,” Karzai remarked, stressing sincere efforts for national reconciliation.

Karzai said Afghanistan had finally gained sovereignty, a long-cherished aspiration of his predecessor that must be protected and further cemented.

Salahuddin Rabbani, the current chairman of the High Peace Council, accused the government of failing to pay adequate attention to investigating his father’s assassination. He urged the authorities to focus on the probe.

Prof. Rabbani, the second president of the mujahideen suicide attacker killed him inside residence in the diplomatic enclave of Wazir Akbar Khan on April 20, 2011.
