KABUL): Two commanders were among 14 insurgents killed in different parts of central Maidan Wardak province over the past 24 hours, the authorities claimed on Saturday.

Another 14 fighters were wounded in Maidan Shahr, the provincial capital, Chak, Daimirdad and Syedabad district, a statement from the governor’s office said.

One Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier was also wounded in the clashes, which led to the seizure of some arms and ammunition, the statement added.

Commander Mahzat, also known as Zanzir, was killed along with nine associates in an airstrike and operations in Dara-i-Kohna Khumar and Khota Ashra areas of Maidan Shahr. A second rebel commander was captured in injured condition.

Also in the provincial capital, two guerrillas were blown up by the landmines they were planting in Kashmiri area. Two more fighters were killed and five wounded in the Baghak area of Syedabad district.

In the Cheena area of Daimirdad, local Taliban Abdur Rahman was killed and three of his accomplices were injured. Five guerrillas were wounded in a clash with security personnel in Chak.

But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied the casualties, saying they had wounded three ANA soldiers during an attack in the Basraq area of Maidan Shahr.
