KABUL deputy speaker announced on Saturday.

A public representative from the remote province told the lower house foreign intelligence networks and some government functionaries, in a bid to retain their seats, were involved in fomenting trouble in the country.

Fazal Azim Mujaddedi, lamenting the latest trail of murder and mayhem, said: “Cursed are the people who are fanning the flames of war in Afghanistan in a bid to protect their petty personal interests.”

Badakhshan had been one of the most secure provinces but dozens of security personnel were killed and several police pick-ups seized by the Taliban there in recent weeks, the legislator said, warning the unrest could spread across the north.

Nilofar Ibrahimi, also hailing from Badakhshan, said Warduj district had been in the grip of the insurgency over the past two months. “Innocent sons of the soil are being killed there on a daily basis due to the government’s wrong policy.”

Her colleague Amanullah Paiman claimed more districts of the province were sliding into violence. “We have told security organs several times about the situation, but our complaints have apparently fallen on deaf ears.”

In response to the lawmakers’ remarks, 2nd Deputy Speaker Mirwais Yasini, who chaired the session, said insecurity had lately been rising in other parts of the country as well.

He added an eight-member delegation, including representatives from different panels of the house, would soon visit Warduj to probe the situation. He urged MPs to step up supervision of government activities in order to resolve people’s problems.
