JALALABAD/SHARANA (PAN): Four militants, a police officer and one civilian have been killed during separate incidents in eastern Nangarhar and southern Paktika provinces, officials said on Sunday.

The four militants were killed in Nangarhar on Saturday night, when they attacked a police post in the Zhai area of Nazian district, the governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A border police official, who did not want to be named, said the dead rebels included a Pakistani commander.

Elsewhere, gunmen opened fire at participants of a funeral procession for a police officer, killing one and injuring two others in the Argon district of Paktika.

The police officer was killed as a result of personal enmity, according to crime branch chief, Zalmai.

In Sarobi district, local police members clashed with insurgents in Zami area, said the Paktika police chief Brig. Gen. Daulat Khan Zadran.

Two fighters were wounded and some weapons and four motorcycles seized by ALP personnel, he said, accusing the Taliban of killing a civilian in Sara Roza district.

A resident of the area, Khalid, said the Taliban killed the civilian whom they mistook for an ALP member.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said heavy casualties were inflicted on Nangarhar border police during guerrilla attacks. But he did not provide details.

Mujahid added one Afghan National Army soldier was killed and another wounded when fighters attacked their patrol, but local officials rejected his claim.
