KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): At least 16 policemen have been killed in two separate incidents in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Monday.

Eleven border policemen were killed late on Sunday when militants equipped with heavy weapons sneaked from Pakistan and stormed a security post in Shurabak district.

Afghan Local Police (ALP) Commander Gen. Tafsir Khan Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News the assailants fled back to the neighbouring country after the attack. Security forces have launched a clearing operation in the area.

Elsewhere in Kandahar, five Afghan Local Police (ALP) members were killed in infighting in Zherai district, a security official said on condition of anonymity.

He added two members, who recently joined the force, fired at their colleagues, killing five of them. The attackers reportedly managed to flee their duty station along with ALP weapons.

Jamal Agha, the district’s administrative head, confirmed the incident but had no more information about the insider attack. The governor’s spokesman, Javed Faisal, was unaware about the killings.

In Arghistan district, Faisal said, two civilians — a 14-year-old boy and his grandmother — were killed in a roadside bombing. The victims were on their way from Chawkazi village to Kamzi area.
