KABUL): Prices of food and other daily-use items have increased four folds due to a prolonged road blockade in the remote eastern province of Nuristan, officials said on Wednesday.

The only road leading from the capital of Kunar to Nuristan has been blocked for the past two months due to security concerns, sending prices soaring.

Zahir Bahand, the governor’s spokesman, told a press conference in Kabul the price of a 50-kilogram bag of flour had shot up from 1,500 afghanis to 7,500 afs.

If the situation was not controlled, there might be a big humanitarian crisis, he warned, saying government employees were worst-hit by the closure of the road.

Over the past nine days, an operation has been ongoing to clear the main road, the spokesman, asking for the deployment of more security personnel to the province.

“If people’s council does not cooperate with the government, the province may fall to militants,” he said, calling for immediate attention to security, road blockades and price control.
