Drone strikes affecting anti-terror fight: Aziz
Participating in a UN Security Council debate in New York on Thursday, Pakistan’s foreign affairs advisor stressed an immediate end to the American drone strikes in tribal areas near the Afghanistan border.
Sartaj Aziz told the 15-member UN body that the attacks -- amounting to a clear breach of international humanitarian law -- were detrimental to efforts at fighting terrorism.
“Drone strikes result in civilian casualties, including women and children,” Aziz added, agreeing with Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s observation in his report that the strikes had a serious impact on the psycho-social health of children.
The Security Council adopted a resolution seeking to reinforce measures to prevent illicit transfers, accumulation and misuse of small weapons.
