KABUL): While insisting on police impartially during next year’s elections, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Sunday promised security of presidential and provincial council candidates.

Improved security, especially for the elections in April 2014, remained one of the main goals for the ministry, MoI spokesman Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui told a press conference in Kabul.

They were trying to maintain security throughout the electoral process and provide an enabling environment to the people to participate actively in the democratic exercise without any fear, he said.

Siddiqui added Deputy Minister of Interior Lt. Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi had visited several provinces over the past few days to access the implementation of security plans for elections.

He explained election-related challenges had been classified as low level, mid-level and high-level threats. Police were well equipped, trained and able to measure up to the challenge of election security.

Siddiqui reiterated police would remain impartial during elections, without work for or against any candidate. Several police officials, including a district police chief in Nangarhar, had already been sacked on charges of interfering in the election campaign.
