ASADABAD (PAN) office in eastern Kunar province said on Thursday it would refund cash guarantee to unsuccessful female candidate for provincial councils (PCs).

In addition to opening registration centres in the 14 districts of the province, IEC has also appointed four mobile voters’ registration teams in Watapur, Khas Kunar and Asadabad to facilitate the delivery of voter cards.

Sadatullah Mirza, in charge of training and public outreach at the IEC, told Pajhwok Afghan News two separate registration sites for men and women had been opened in each district. So far more than 60,000 cards have been distributed.

For the provincial council, 38 people including seven women had been issued with information kits, he said. At least 22, four women among them, have formally nominated themselves for PC elections.

As part of efforts to facilitate women poll contenders, the commission would refund the 20,000 afghanis in cash guarantees to losers.

In order to involve more women in the electoral process, the IEC would also pay the expenses of posters and other programmes to female runners, he concluded.
