KABUL who did what they could to capture or kill him, an insurgent commander was quoted as saying on Sunday.

Rebel leader Qari Nasrullah told Daily Mirror the movement repeatedly tried to breach security surrounding the young member of the royal family. “When your prince came here and flew his Apache helicopter and bombarded the mujahidin it meant our fighters did not exactly have a soft spot for him.”

To the militants, Harry was just an ordinary soldier fighting for America, the commander said, adding they had devised a string of plans to capture him but he managed to escape.

Harry has twice served in Afghanistan with British forces, but his 2008 tour as an infantryman calling in air strikes on the Taliban was cut short after 10 weeks when foreign media broke a strict news blackout and announced he was there.

Soon after his arrival, the sprawling British military base in Helmand — Camp Bastion — was stormed by suicide bombers with the support of fighters on the ground who attacked the desert perimeter with rocket-propelled grenades and AK47 assault rifles.

About civilian casualties, Nasrullah replied: “The entire world bases or are seen to be supporting them…”
