KABUL.

The UNSC on Thursday extended for the last time NATO’s mandate till December 31, 2104, noting the situation in Afghanistan “still constitutes” a threat to international peace and security.

But the Taliban in a statement said: “We strongly reject the impression and concept that Afghanistan poses a threat the world’s security. Afghanistan is no threat to anyone.”

The rebels said the history proved that Afghanistan had never created problems for others, but these were foreigners who made inroads to Afghanistan with time to time, compelling Afghans to put up resistance.

The Taliban wrote foreign troops, especially NATO forces, had bombed civilian homes, detained innocent and intimidated people in Afghanistan over the past 12 years.

The UN’s decision to extend NATO’s mission in Afghanistan showed the world body was complicit in the atrocities, the Taliban said.

They said foreign troops had not been able to achieve gains over the past decade and would not be able to achieve something in a year’s time. They urged Islamic countries to condemn the UN action.
