KABUL a day earlier.

Jamal wanted to deliver a speech after offering Eidul Adha prayers at the main mosque in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of the central province, when a bomb hidden in a microphone was remotely detonated.

There were no other fatalities, but 20 people sustained injuries in the blast, which the National Directorate of Security, the spy service, on Wednesday claimed “caused by explosives concealed in a copy of the holy Quran.”

HIA spokesman Abdullah Kamalwal told Pajhwok Afghan News Jamal had been associated with the non-violent HIA faction and had great contributions to the party.

He said only Jamal had been targeted in the blast that showed some powerful hands were involved in the plot.

HIA executive body member and running mate of Abdullah Abdullah, Mohammad Khan also condemned Jamal’s assassination, saying his death was a big blow to the party and the nation.

Kamawal said Jamal was due to be introduced as commerce and industry minister after Eid holidays to replace resigning minister Anwarul Haq Ahadi.

No group has claimed responsibility for Jamal’s assassination that drew strong condemnation from President Hamid Karzai, ministers, governors and foreign diplomats based in Kabul.
