The call was echoed at a gathering attended by hundreds of people, including tribal elders, religious scholars, civil society activists, provincial council members and youth representatives in Khost City, the capital of southeastern Khost province, on Wednesday.

The governor spokesman, Mubariz Zadran, told Pajhwok Afghan News that religious scholars in their speeches to the gathering called as crucial people’s cooperation with the government in achieving peace and stability in the country.

The clerics urged the people to actively take part in the April 5 presidential and provincial council elections in order to shape their destiny on their own.

In his address, tribal elder Rassoul Gul Mangal said the ground had been paved for the landmark elections by the government and now it was up to the people to vote for candidates of their choice.

Participants of the gathering also called on insurgents to renounce violence, join the peace process and take part in the elections.

For his part, Governor Abdul Jabbar Naeemi said no one would be allowed to disrupt the election process by creating insecurity or committing irregularities.

“We urge religious leaders and the media to play their role in highlighting the importance of the elections in order the masses realise how to make their future secure.”
