KHOST CITY (PAN): Government officials, tribal elders and residents in southeastern Khost province on Friday called for the assassins of Logar governor Arsala Jamal to be identified and punished.

The call came at a gathering held in Khost City, the provincial capital, to offer prayers for the soul of Jamal, who was killed on Tuesday in a bomb attack at the main mosque in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of central Logar province.

The gathering comes a day after Jamal was buried in a graveyard in Kabul, where senior government dignitaries, relatives and friends were in attendance.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for Jamal’s assassination that drew strong condemnation from President Karzai, the United Nations, his colleagues, lawmakers and foreign diplomats based in Kabul.

A statement issued from the Khost governor’s office said the memorial service for Jamal was attended by a number of religious scholars, government officials and tribal elders.

Also present on the occasion was Governor Abdul Jabbar Naeemi, who strongly condemned his colleague’s assassination as a cowardly and un-Islamic act.

He said such attacks on government officials would not prevent them from going to mosques and celebrating religious festivals and cultural events among the masses.

Naeemi called for a thorough-going investigation into Jamal’s assassination to determine who maneuvered behind the attack.

For his part, Khost Ulema Shah Mohammad condemned in his strongest words brazen attacks on mosques and other sacred places. He believed no Muslim could carry out such attacks, which he said were aimed at defaming Islam.

Tribal elder Haji Rassoul Mohammad Tanai said the attack on Jamal was the handiwork of “hidden enemy” of the Afghans, asking the central government to seriously investigate his murder.
