Kabul to release 2,500 Pakistani prisoners: JUI-F

KABUL-i-Islam (JUI), led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, has said.

Maulana Gul Nasib, a central leader of the religious and political party, told reporters in Chakdara town of Lower Dir in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday JUI chief Fazlur Rahman had raised the issue of prisoners with President Hamid Karzai during his recent visit to Kabul.

Nasib, who accompanied Rahman on his trip to Kabul earlier this month, said the US wanted to keep nine bases in Afghanistan after 2014 in order to maintain a tight grip on local politics, a stand disliked by the Afghan government.

Calling Fazlur Rahman visit to Kabul as successful, he said US Secretary of State John Kerry also rushed to Afghanistan owing to the visit.

He said about 2,500 Pakistanis were imprisoned in Afghanistan and the JUI-F chief talked to President Karzai in this regard. The JUI leader said that Karzai had agreed to their demand of prisoners’ release.

He said that it was now the responsibility of government of Pakistan to send its prisoners’ list to the government of Afghanistan.

The JUI-F chief would soon brief Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on his talks with Karzai, asking Islamabad to to immediately appoint a team for holding talks with the Pakistani Taliban, who he said should honour ulema’s appeal for a ceasefire.
