KABUL): Lieutenant General Zahir Aghbar on Saturday announced tendering his resignation as National Olympic Committee head.
Talking to Pajhwok Afghan News, Aghbar said rifts within the National Olympic Committee had prompted his decision to stand down.
“I don’t want to compromise the interests of the Olympic Committee for my personal interests in the wake of differences within the body. I have decided to sacrifice my personal interests and have formally tendered my resignation,” he said.
However, he did not give details of the cracks within the committee. Aghbar assumed charge of the Olympic Committee in 2009. Currently, his deputy Farishta Farrukh is said to be heading the body.
