PUL-I-ALAM (PAN): Two security officials have been detained in connection with the assassination of Logar Governor Arsala Jamal, the acting governor said on Monday.

A close confidante of President Hamid Karzai, Jamal was killed in a bomb attack at the main mosque in Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital, on October 15 — the first day of Eidul Adha.

Initially, local officials said the bomb had been concealed in a microphone but the Afghan spy service — the National Directorate of Security — later claimed the explosives had been placed in a copy of the holy Quran.

Acting Governor Mohammad Hashim Faizi told Pajhwok Afghan News a National Directorate of Security (NDS uprising leader Farhad Akbari had been arrested.

The two men had several secret telephone contacts ahead of the Eid festival, he said, adding their calls had been tapped and they were suspected of plotting the governor’s assassination.

Another 10 Logar-based intelligence agents have also been nabbed, according to the acting governor, who said the detainees included some officers.

Jawad Akbari, a brother of Farhad Akbari, confirmed the arrest of the anti-Taliban uprising leader. However, he denied his brother’s complicity in the governor’s killing.
