FAIZABAD (PAN): A battalion of the Afghan National Army (ANA) has been deployed to the Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province to stabilise the remote restive town, an official said on Wednesday.

The 209th Shaheen Military Crops of battalion replaced the 111th division of the Quick Reaction Force, Warduj district chief, Dawlat Mohammad Khawar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the Afghan soldiers would stay in Dargab and Yakhshira areas until the holding of the upcoming presidential and provincial council election, he said. Khawar called the move a positive step toward stabilising the region.

Col. Abdul Rauf Arghandiwal, the battalion commander, said there were no security threats in Warduj and said his soldiers — equipped with light and heavy weapons — had the capacity to curb the insurgency there.
