GHAZNI CITY (PAN): At least nine insurgents were killed and a village cleared during an early morning security operation in the Giro district of southern Ghazni province on Thursday, an official said.

The operation involved Afghan Local Police (ALP), Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police (ANP) personnel, said Mohammad Qasim Desiwal, the administrative head of Andar district.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the Sher Qala village of Giro was retaken from insurgents after a clash that left five rebels dead. An ALP post was established in the village to keep the insurgents from staging a comeback.

The operation was later extended to Parcha village, where four militants were killed and some weapons and ammunition seized, Desiwal said. One ALP member was injured during the operation and there were no fatalities among the forces.

The governor’s spokesman, Shafique Nang said the Afghan forces were gaining grounds against militants as a result of the offensive. He added more ALP posts would be established in restive areas of the province.
