GARDEZ (PAN): Security forces in southeastern Paktia province on Wednesday claimed recovering rare statues and coins from smugglers.
Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Zalmai Oryakhel, told Pajhwok Afghan News the seizure included five coins and three statues.
Based on an intelligence tip, police recovered the artifacts — smuggled from central Logar province — from a graveyard in Paktia.
No one has been detained in connection with the smuggling bid, according to the police chief, who believed the ancient coins had a high value.
The coins and statues would be handed over to the Afghanistan National Museum, he said, acknowledging the smuggling of historical objects from Logar and Paktia.
Logar Information & Culture Director Mohammad Shafiq said a number of historical sites in the province had rare artifacts. He was unaware whether or not the artifacts had been smuggled from Logar.
