Changes likely in final candidate list

KABUL): Hinting at a possible change in the final list of presidential candidates, the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Thursday said it would announce the outcome of investigations into objections on schedule.

“The process of investigation into people’s complaints against candidates is going well,” IECC member and spokesman Mohammad Nadir Mohseni told reporters in Kabul.

He promised the results of investigations would not be delayed like the release of the preliminary list.

After a three-day delay in the announcement, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) shortlisted 10 of the 27 presidential candidates, throwing 17 out of the race — a decision that drew criticism from rejected contenders and lawmakers.

Mohseni confirmed the final list could be changed by removing or adding candidates on the basis of convincing evidence.

So far 650 complaints, including from the rejected presidential runners, have been lodged with the IECC.

The spokesman said though time had not been sufficient to probe so many complaints and documents, yet they would try to announce the outcome within the stipulated time — nine days later.

IECC chief Abdul Sattar Sadat earlier said the time for investigation could be extended if it was necessary. For the last four days, IECC officials have been listening to disqualified candidates and common people visiting the office with evidence.

Mohseni said the initial hearings on complaints would continue until Saturday. The IECC’s decision on complaints is final.
