MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): One worker was killed and another injured when a coalmine partially collapsed in the Dara-i-Sauf Bala district of northern Samangan province, officials said on Thursday.
Governor Khairullah Anosh told Pajhwok Afghan News a delegation had been sent to the area to investigate Wednesday’s incident that occurred at a privately-run coalmine.
He said the government had authorised some private individuals to extract coal from mines in the district.
The district chief, Ahmad Ali, said the ongoing rains triggered the collapse. He added the government had ordered all extraction activities halted in the wake of heavy rains to avoid any untoward incident.
In September this year, nearly 22 people were killed and as many others injured in a coal mine collapse in Ro-i-Dohab district. Nearly 50 people had been trapped under the debris of the Abkhorak mine.
