HERAT CITY (PAN, officials said on Friday.

Working on a ring road project in Badghis province, the men had been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in the Karkh district of Herat a month a month ago.

The kidnappers freed them in Herat last night, a project official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity. Without giving details, he said the quartet was in good health.

A month back, Herat’s deputy police chief had accused the Taliban of disembarking the road workers from their vehicle in Karkh district. Brig. Gen. Abdul Hamid Hamidi had said the men were seized on their way to the project site.

Being built by a US firm, the road is part of the Afghanistan Ring Road project that has been hamstrung by insecurity over the past five years.

But the Badghis governor’s spokesman, Mirwais Mirzakwal, says the situation has now considerably improved and workers’ security will be ensured.
