KUNDUZ CITY/PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN): Gunmen kidnapped the rural development director of northern Kunduz province and killed his brother during an attack on their car in Baghlan province, officials said on Saturday.

Eng. Shafiqullah Alamyar and his brother were travelling in Masjid Safaid area of Baghlan-i-Markazi district on their way to Kunduz when unknown armed individuals attacked them.

Baghlan-i-Markazi district chief Gauhar Baburi told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban insurgents were behind kidnapping the official and killing his brother.

He said police had reached the area and had launched an investigation into the incident. The attackers were being traced in order to rescue the rural rehabilitation chief, the official added.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Kunduz Rural Rehabilitation Department official said Alamyar belonged to the Baghlan-i-Markazi district, where he had had gone to visit home. He was kidnapped on his way to office in Kunduz.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident that took place on the Baghlan-Kunduz Highway, which has lately been increasingly becoming insecure.

Two months ago, gunmen opened fire at a passenger car on the route, killing a woman and a man.
