2 held with 171 kg of drugs in Takhar
TALOQAN (PAN): Police in northern Takhar province on Monday detained two smugglers with 171 kilograms of drugs, official said.
Provincial police chief, Maj. Gen. Abdul Hanan Agha Gul Qatghani, told Pajhwok Afghan News 166 kilograms of opium and five kilograms of heroin were seized from the smugglers.
Hailing from Helmand and Badghis provinces, the smugglers were transferring the drugs in a truck full of sheep, he said, adding police recovered the narcotics after searching the vehicle at the Taloqan check-post.
The narcotics were being trafficked to Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul, according to the police chief, who said hundreds of kilograms of drugs had been seized and 16 individuals arrested in different areas of Takhar over the past few months.
Last spring, Gen. Baz Muhammad Ahmadi, the deputy interior minister of counternarcotics, said he was striving to control drug smuggling in the entire country.
