Attack on radio station tied to verbal clash

JALALABAD (PAN): An official on Friday said militants did not attack Radio Bahar offices in eastern Nangarhar province as reported earlier. The attack took place following a verbal brawl between a peon of the radio station and a resident, he said.

Three days back, some people beat a worker of Radio Bahar. Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News Governor Attaullah Ludin had formed a committee to investigate the matter.

He said the committee found that a verbal clash between the radio worker and the local had led to the incident. “A peon of the radio station, Rasul Khan, and resident Zabit Khan exchanged harsh words on a petty matter.”

Deputy Governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal, in a meeting with journalists, said the issue had no political motives and should be resolved through negotiations.

“Following mediation from journalists between the two parties, the matter has been resolved through jirga,” the spokesman added. He promised the government would facilitate journalists in discharging their duty.

Lal Pacha Azmoon, head of the local journalists’ association, expressed satisfaction with the dispute settlement and said the matter had no political motives.
