HERAT CITY (PAN and Washington.

At a meeting with Herat Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi, the ambassador said the pact was vital for continued cooperation between the allies. President Hamid Karzai should ink the agreement as soon as possible, he stressed.

The governor asked that the US to take effective measures to eradicate militant sanctuaries outside Afghanistan’s borders. Wahidi said the peace drive should be expedited to ensure security across the country.

On Sunday, a grand tribal assembly featuring 2,500 delegates overwhelmingly supported the deal and urged the government to sign it before the April 2014 presidential and provincial council elections.

US consulate officials said the ambassador’s visit was aimed to assess reconstruction work on a new American consulate building in Herat City. Two months back, suicide bombers attacked the consulate in Herat, leaving the building considerably damaged.
