KABUL.

In her statement, a copy is available with Pajhwok Afghan News, Warsi said there had been positive changes in Afghanistan with regard to women’s access to health facilities. Afghan women played a crucial role on a daily basis in political, business and cultural activities, she said.

She said women’s role in Afghanistan’s development was of great importance, saying if women were allowed to be part of politics and social affairs, it would benefit the people of Afghanistan.

In reference to the United Nations International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women, Warsi said the day was celebrated so that many women facing numerous problems could speak against injustices and struggle to bring about positive change in their lives.

However, she said the problems being faced by Afghanistan and the achievements so far made should not be underestimated. She said many things remained to be done so the women of Afghanistan could have access to their constitutional rights.

She said the UK was committed to long-term assistance to Afghanistan including international efforts for the elimination of violence against women.

She said reports showing 87 percent of Afghan women being subjected to violent acts were not acceptable.
