British Marine jailed for killing wounded Taliban man
KABUL (PAN): A British marine has been convicted of murdering a wounded Taliban militant in southern Helmand province and jailed for life with a minimum 10 years behind bars by a military court in Bulford, southwest England.
Sergeant Alexander Blackman was handed down the sentence on Friday after found guilty of murdering the Taliban man last month while deployed in Helmand in September 2011, media reports said.
The military court acquitted two other marines of the killing. The three were charged after military authorities found footage of the incident on a helmet camera.
Blackman, 39, was recorded shooting the severely injured Taliban fighter in the chest at close range while quoting Shakespeare.
His name was disclosed a day earlier following a court ruling that lifted an anonymity order preventing him from being identified.
