Cross border attack kills civilian in Khost: MoI

KABUL (PAN): The Afghan Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Sunday accused Pakistani forces of carrying out a cross border rocket attack that killed one civilian and injured two others in southeastern Khost province a day earlier.

The ministry in a statement condemned the latest shelling from across the Durand Line’s sovereignty.

The ministry said the rockets were fired into Afghan soil late Saturday, leaving one person dead and two others injured.

The ministry asked the Pakistani government to stop such attacks into Afghan border provinces in future.

An official in Khost’s provincial official, wishing not to be named, confirmed the death of one civilian and injuries to two others in the attack, adding the rockets hit Dabki area near Khost City, the provincial capital.

Pakistani forces have been periodically firing missiles, rockets and artillery shells into eastern Kunar, Nangarhar and Khost provinces and so far several people in border villages have been killed, maimed and displaced as a result, according to Afghan officials.

The latest cross border attack comes less than two weeks after Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif visited Kabul and met President Karzai, promising efforts at advancing the Afghan peace process.

In July last year, Karzai accused Pakistan’s army of launching months of rocket attacks on his country’s territory and threatened to report Islamabad to the UN Security Council.
