FAIZABAD (PAN): An unknown man stabbed to death a doctor at his private clinic in Faizabad, the capital of northeastern Badakhshan province, prompting his colleagues at public sector hospitals to call an emergency meeting on Wednesday, officials said.

The victim, Dr. Abdul Qayyum, was at his private clinic when an individual laced with a knife attacked him late on Tuesday, police chief Lt Col. Syed Jahangir Kiramat told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the incident appeared to be a result of personal enmity and that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the murder.

After the incident, a large number of doctors held an emergency meeting at the provincial Public Health Department, and warned of tendering their resignations en masse if threats to their lives continued.

Public Health Director Ahmad Khawari confirmed threats against doctors had increased and they did not feel safe wherever they worked.

“If the situation continues, most doctors will be discouraged to perform their job,” he said.

Dr. Humayon, who attended the meeting, said unidentified men phoned them and said they had killed Qahar and their turn would come next. The doctors asked security forces to enhance their security.

Deputy Governor Gul Mohammad Bidar, who attended the meeting, said the issue would be discussed at a special meeting of provincial government officials.

He added security forces had always tried to maintain security for doctors, who served the ailing humanity.

The incident comes a month after construction engineer was stabbed to death by a son of the Faizabad mayor and the incident sparked violent protests, forcing police to arrest the accused.
