KABUL by 122 runs and won the ICC Intercontinental Cup in Dubai.
Earlier, in Sharjah, Afghanistan lost their first-ever Twenty-20 international to Pakistan by six wickets last on Sunday.
However, it is the fourth time Ireland won the match and they deposed the previous Cup holders in convincing fashion.
Afghanistan started the day 136-5 and pursuing a challenging 347 for victory, but they made a good fist of it with Rehmat Shah (86 not out) and Mohammad Nabi (49) putting together a partnership that frustrated the Irish bowlers.
At a time when Afghanistan player Nabi went down lbw to Sorensen, Afghan resistance slowed down while Ireland rattled through the lower order giving up just five runs to the last four batsmen.
It was a fitting final match for Trent Johnston who finally hung up his bat after a glittering career with Ireland.
