KABUL): The Ministry of Public Work on Monday signed agreements with six local construction firms to initiate work on two road projects in Kabul and Kunduz and six bridges in five other provinces.

Under the agreements, the firms would execute the 226 million afghanis World Bank-funded projects, said Deputy Public Works Minister Ahmad Shah Wahidi, who signed the contracts.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News a 7-kilometre road in Estalif district of Kabul and an 8-km road in northern Kunduz province would be constructed as part of the schemes.

Six bridges would be built in Baghlan, Daikundi, Badakhshan, Paktika and Faryab provinces to facilitate transportation.

The projects are being implemented under the Public Works Ministry’s National Rural Support Programme, Wahidi said.

In 2013, the Work Bank spent $55 million in aid on development projects in Afghanistan through the ministry, he said, another $100 million would be spent on infrastructural development projects next year.
