KANDAHAR (PAN department say they are trying to remove the checkpoints.

Some years back, police established security check-posts in Zherai, Panjwai and Arghandab districts amid threats from militants. The move was said to be partially aimed at protecting educational institutions.

Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, education department spokesman Jandullah acknowledged police check-posts were still operational in four schools in the districts.

Security posts were set up at educational institutions in the province after a number of schools were closed as a result of militant threats and mounting insecurity.

The provincial government planned to remove the security posts from educational institutions, Jandullah said, adding the schools damaged in fighting would be repaired.

But locals said a large number of schools had been turned into check-posts, and there was still a heavy police presence in school buildings.

An elder from Zherai, wishing not to be named, said most of the schools were being used for security purposes and their children’ education had been affected.

Locals complained many schools in the three districts had been closed over the past decade.

But Mohammad Ewaz Nazari, the deputy director of education, said the closed educational institutions would be reopened soon with the cooperation of residents.
