MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): The UN and the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation on Tuesday began distributing aid to over 500 vulnerable families in the northern zone to help them in the harsh winter season.

Fahim Hamdard, UN public relations officer in Balkh province, said blankets, charcoal, plastic sheets, jerry cans and other winter supplies, as well as food rations, were also being distributed to other deserving families, which.

He said 5,000 families would get aid in the nine northern provinces. The beneficiaries are a mix of vulnerable recently returned refugees and internally-displaced people.

Ghulam Ali, a refugee who recently returned from Iran, said he had received aid ahead of the winter season but he was worried about harsh cold.

Under the plan, around 2,300 families in Kunduz and Faryab, 400 in Jawzjan, 500 in Balkh, 470 in Baghlan, over 300 in Takhar and 340 in Sar-i-Pul would receive aid, he added.

The minister of refugee and repatriation had earlier said winter aid would be extended to 26,000 deserving and internally-displaced families.

Provincial Disaster Management Committees (PDMC) and humanitarian actors, including UNHCR, are working with the government and communities to improve distribution not only in the provincial centres, but also in districts and villages.
