KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan was granted the International Union of Railways (UIC) membership at the 83rd General Assembly held last week in Paris, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.
A statement from the ministry said the ambassador of of Afghanistan to France and the Afghanistan Railways representative participated in the biannual meeting.
It added Afghanistan was in the process of constructing regional railway lines through the two main trade and transit ports to the railway ring network by 2040.
The construction of 75 the kilometres Hairatan- Mazar railway line has been completed and the construction of a 124 kilometres track from Herat to Islam Qala is underway. These two stretches are parts of a 3,429 kilometres railway line, which will be completed by 2025.
