FARAH CITY (PAN): After five months of suspension, designing work on the Bakhashabad power dam in western Farah province has resumed, officials said on Wednesday.

A designing contract for the dam Situated in the Bala Blok district, 100 kilometres east of Farah City, was signed with the Pakistani company Nespak five months ago, but the project was halted due to insecurity.

Governor Mohammad Omar Sherzad told Pajhwok Afghan News the provincial authorities had repeatedly urged the Taliban to help complete the project, but the fighters refused to cooperate.

But resident have now promised cooperation with the government in implementing the scheme, according to the governor, who said Afghan forces were able to maintain security for the designers.

On Tuesday, some Afghan and Pakistani engineers travelled to the area to launch designing of the vital power project, the governor said, adding the process would take one year to complete.

Head of provincial council Abdul Saboor Khairkhwa hoped electricity shortage and irrigation problem in Farah would be overcome once the dam was constructed.
