ANA soldiers among 10 dead in clashes
ASADABAD/HERAT CITY (PAN): Four Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and six Taliban have been killed in fresh clashes in eastern Kunar and western Herat provinces, security officials said on Saturday.
A spokesman for the 207th ANA Zafar Corps in Herat told Pajhwok Afghan News that a security officer had been killed by unidentified gunmen.
Col. Najibullah Najibi said the officer – Shamsuddin -- was heading toward his check-post when unidentified gunmen shot him dead in the Maiarono locality on the outskirts of Herat City.
As usual, the Taliban claimed responsibility for killing Shamsuddin.
Col. Abdul Qayyum Noorzai, the Shindand district police chief, said infighting between Taliban groups had left three militants dead and several others wounded.
Gen. Zahir Azimi, the Ministry of Defense spokesman, said ANA officer Cap. Mohammad Azam was killed by militants in Kunar while he was on leave. The officer hailed from the Shigal district of the province.
He said three militants were also killed in an exchange of gunfire triggered by an attack on Azam’s home. Later, the assailants torched the house of the officer.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, acknowledged the loss of three fighters in the incident.
The Ministry of Defense said two other soldiers were killed in different incidents in Zabul and Helmand provinces.
During a search operation, security forces rounded up six militants and recovered heavy weapons from their possession in Kandahar province.
