KABUL): The Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoI) on Monday announced sending a formal complaint letter to the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry regarding lawmaker Huma Sultani.

Security guards of Sultani, a public representative from southern Ghazni province in the Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of the parliament, on Sunday beat a police officer in Kabul.

Siddique Siddiqui, the MoI spokesman, confirmed Pajhwok Afghan News dispatch of the complaint letter was sent to the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry. The letter will be referred to the parliament.

He said: “We strongly condemn this misdemeanor by the legislator. In the letter, MoI has urged the house to move against the MP for beating a police officer.”

Beating of policemen by strongmen, including parliamentarians, had also happened in the past, Siddiqui said, adding the ministry had legally pursued such cases.

He said the police officer was beaten up near the Pakistan embassy in the Cinema Baharistan area. He hoped the Wolesi Jirga would properly address the issue as a mark of solidarity with security forces.

Sultani is yet to comment on the issue, but Sharifullah Kamawal — head of the Wolesi Jirga Privileges Commission, promised the assembly would seriously track the incident.
