China backs Afghan peace bid, transition

Dec 31, 2013 - 11:05

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Supporting the Afghan people's decision on their future, China has said the ongoing reconciliation process should be led and owned by Kabul.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistaninfo-icon Sun Weidong told reporters in Islamabad on Monday his country was ready to play a role in the smooth transition of US forces from Afghanistaninfo-icon in 2014,

However, he insisted the interests of neighbouring countries should not be overlooked, the ambassador was quoted as saying by the Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune.

“We will see a change in Afghanistan in 2014 and are hopeful about stability,” Weidong said, urging the global fraternity to make the transition a success.

Asked about Beijing-Islamabad ties, the ambassador said that the two sides should enhance cooperation in regional and international affairs.

"The two countries should push forward the Afghanistan peace process, support the cooperative SAARCinfo-icon process and maintain regional peace," he added.
