ASADABAD (PAN): A resident of the Noorgal district of eastern Kunar province was sentenced on Wednesday to 20 years in prison for killing his wife, an official said.
The verdict was handed down at the end of an open trial in the district, where prosecution lawyer Ahmad Zia read out documentary evidence against the accused, Mir Mohammad.
He demanded stringent punishment for the alleged killer under Article 396 of the Penal Code and Article 22 of Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) Law.
While confessing to the murder of his spouse and Mahsal Khan, his son-in-law, the accused said the two had illicit relations and he caught them red-handed. Mohammad prayed for his release.
But Judge Sabir Sahak, after studying evidence and hearing the confession from Mohammad, announced the judgment, sentencing the accused to 20-year imprisonment.
Khan’s lawyer Mohibullah Farooqi said his client had been forced into killing his wife and son-in-law to save his face. He prayed Mohammad’s sons had also forgiven their father, agreeing with his action. Farooqi pleaded for his client’s acquittal.
